Owner-operator Carmen Cornelius has been a Crossfield resident for over 25 years. After running a butcher shop for a decade, he saw the opportunity to bring a full-service grocery store to a growing community — and took the chance. Since 2008, Carmen's Bigway Foods has been Crossfield's only grocery store, and Carmen wouldn't have it any other way.

Today, the store is the go-to destination for fresh produce, quality Alberta beef, house-made beef jerky, specialties like stuffed mushrooms and zucchini boats, pre-made salads, and an expanding gluten-free selection. The staff know your name, and checkout lines are refreshingly short compared to the big-box stores down the road in Airdrie.

Carmen is deeply invested in the Crossfield community. He sits on the Town's economic development board, hosts barbecues for community events, and supports W.G. Murdoch School graduation festivities. Each December, donations are collected in-store for the Crossfield Christmas Emergency Food Hamper Program — and on Giving Tuesday, Carmen matches every dollar.

Whether it's growing a moustache to raise $800 for Movember or quietly funding local organizations behind the scenes, Carmen lives by a simple philosophy: if we don't support each other, people drive out of town. That small-town spirit is what makes shopping here feel like more than just picking up groceries.
